Caring For Your Jewellery - Gold Fill
We offer gold filled pieces in our collection as they are a quality alternative to the much more expensive solid karat gold. It's high in quality and with proper care and storage you will have affordable jewellery that lasts.
Gold filled jewellery is made of a layer of gold pressure bonded to another metal, usually brass, and is tarnish resistant. Don't confuse this with gold plated that can be very yellow in appearance and flake over time, this is a much superior product.
Some tips to help you care for your gold filled jewellery.
Daily
- Put your piece on after you have applied make-up/perfume. If you apply perfume it will eventually tarnish.
- Take your piece off before showering, cleaning with chemicals, swimming or when sleeping. This helps limit the exposure to chemicals and stress from movement.
- Wipe your piece clean with a soft polishing cloth to remove any body oils from building up.
- Store in an area that has less humidity (not the bathroom) in a sealed bag.
Cleaning
To avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives I find it best to clean gold filled jewellery with warm soapy water and a polishing cloth. Using a polishing cloth will also maximize the shine and luster you can bring back to your piece, other cloths or paper towel may have small fibers you can’t see that can scratch the surface.
The oxidization (or darkening of the letters on your piece of hand stamped jewellery) may wear over time; this may be more evident after cleaning if you have worked too much around the grooves where the item has been stamped.
We are happy to re-oxidise your item for you, contact us to arrange.
You may notice over time that your gold filled piece may start to tarnish, this is a natural response. Polishing and cleaning your jewellery can remove the tarnishing from your piece.
