As many of our followers know we are passionate about the environment and what we can do to help reduce waste. We are avid green thumbs and have reduced waste in our home (one small bin bag a week for a family of 4!). There are so many small changes we can make that have a big result.

What are some of the things we do in the Mikah Studio to lessen our waste footprint?

- Your packaging. Everything in the box you receive has been sourced with limiting waste in mind. The beautiful packaging your piece comes in can be reused or recycled. The bag to store your jewellery will last a lifetime or can be gifted on. The 2 x clear sleeves we use can be placed in your local soft plastics recycling (as well as any little gift wrappers if you were lucky to get one!).
Any material in the box has been purchased with the environment in mind and is made of recycled products and FSC certified (if applicable). The tape used to seal your box is made with a natural water activated gum and from recycled kraft paper so is recyclable and biodegradable (can go in your paper recycling). Even the fill to cushion your order in transit is reusing an item that can be recycled! (This doesn't apply to our sale or key ring packaging, we are currently using up the stock we have for this and then it will also be completely eco friendly).

- Your jewellery. We purchase recycled sterling silver or we recycle our own. Any scraps or off cuts are recycled back into a sheet of metal and if we can't do it in the studio then we have a manufacturer who can do this for us (of course we stock pile this rather than sending many small amounts!). We also limit the use of chemicals we use in the studio and if we do need them we get the natural alternative.

- Office consumables. We RARELY use paper in the studio, the beauty of the online world is that we no longer have to print anything. Working on a cloud helps save waste and unnecessary consumables. If we do use consumables then they are responsibly sourced. This also extends to cleaning products, all made by us or purchased locally from a reputable brand. Our waste generated is so little that we rarely fill a bin bag with what waste can't be recycled.

Mikah Hand Stamped Jewellery Environmental Policy

Mission statement
Mikah Hand Stamped Jewellery and Gifts recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods, with regular review points. We are proud to have very limited waste, almost all of what we use is recycled (including all metals, paper, consumables) and we would only fill a bin with general waste every few months.

Policy aims
We endeavour to:
  • Continually improve and monitor environmental performance.
  • Continually improve and reduce environmental impacts.
  • Incorporate environmental factors into business decisions.
Paper
  • We will minimise the use of paper in the office. Any paper used will be FSC certified and recycled. Once used it will be recycled.
  • We will reduce packaging as much as possible. We have worked to move all our packaging to FSC certified and recycled paper with limited items that can’t be put directly into your home paper recycling. These limited items can be recycled with your soft plastics at your local collection point.
  • We will seek to buy recycled and recyclable paper products.
  • We will reuse and recycle all paper where possible.
Energy and water
  • We will seek to reduce the amount of energy used as much as possible.
  • Lights and electrical equipment will be switched off when not in use.
  • Heating/cooling will be adjusted with energy consumption in mind.
  • The energy consumption and efficiency of new products will be taken into account when purchasing.
  • We are looking to move to solar power in the studio.
Office supplies
  • We will evaluate if the need can be met in another way.
  • We will evaluate the environmental impact of any new products we intend to purchase.
  • We will favour more environmentally friendly and efficient products wherever possible.
  • We will reuse and recycle everything we are able to.
Maintenance and cleaning
  • Cleaning materials used will be as environmentally friendly as possible. We currently only use handmade, homemade or chemical free cleaners.
  • We use only natural products to neutralise our jewellery solutions and dispose of them within local guidelines.
Monitoring and improvement
  • We will comply with and exceed all relevant regulatory requirements.
  • We will continually improve and monitor environmental performance.
  • We will continually improve and reduce environmental impacts.
  • We will incorporate environmental factors into business decisions.
  • We will review this policy and any related business issues at our monthly management meetings.
